Maps have always been objects of curiosity, showing us what is over the horizon, presenting complex data sets in understandable ways. They are fascinating things, fusing science and design as they are employed in a wide range of uses. From battlefield plans to tracing the origins of culture and countless other uses, maps have played a crucial and likely underestimated role in society.

Over the past few years web mapping platforms have grown and matured so that now this enormously powerful tool fits in the palm of our hands. Everyday we interact with spatial data sets within increasingly dynamic and fluid interfaces, as we explore our communities and the world in new and exciting ways. Web mapping has fused my passion for geography and cartography with that of interface design. It presents unique opportunities, challenges and diverse issues to consider, which is just how I like it.
